In luminous black and white, this vertical view of Bryce Canyon reveals a kingdom of hoodoos, sculpted slopes, and solitary pines emerging from radiant shadows. The absence of color draws attention to the canyon’s intricate architecture, where light reveals the passage of time in each stone tower.

Artist’s Statement:
Deep within Bryce Canyon, an ancient kingdom stands in splendid ruin. Towers and battlements rise from the steep slopes, their weathered crowns catching the last warmth of the afternoon sun. Beyond them, immense walls of stone enclose a labyrinth of narrow passages and deserted courtyards.
The composition draws the eye through successive layers of this ancient imagined fortress, as it rises from the pale slopes, its broken battlements illuminated against the darker stone beyond. Farther into the canyon, smaller towers and clustered walls occupy the narrow ridges. Deep ravines separate these formations, their shadows concealing the lower depths of this imagined world.
Presentation in black and white reduces everything to elements of shape, light, and shadow. The monochrome palette focuses greater attention on the intricate textures of the limestone, the weathered surfaces of the towers, and the delicate transitions between sunlight and shadow.
There is a particular romance in these deserted castles. Their walls have stood through ages before human memory, yet their elaborate architecture carries the familiar character of places once inhabited and subsequently abandoned. One can imagine narrow stairways winding through the towers, great halls beneath the cliffs, and lonely watchmen keeping their silent vigil on the ancient battlements.
Time built its castles here, without the help of human hands.
