Artist’s Statement:
Across the great amphitheater of Bryce Canyon, a kingdom of ancient stone stretches toward the distant horizon. Countless towers and ruined battlements rise from the steep hillsides. There is something hauntingly familiar in these formations. The elaborate battlements recall ruined castles, their deserted courtyards and broken towers surrendered to the passage of time.
Presented in classic black-and-white treatment the familiar orange and crimson colors of Bryce Canyon are stripped away, revealing the landscape with only its essential elements of form, texture, and light. Brilliant limestone ridges stand against deep shadows, while the intricate surfaces of the hoodoos emerge with remarkable clarity. The tonal clarity brings an atmosphere of discovery, a record of some remote and forgotten kingdom discovered beyond the edge of the known world.
The eye travels across the panorama, wandering from one ruined citadel to another. Dark stands of pine occupy the sheltered ravines, their dense foliage providing a striking counterpoint to the pale stone. The absence of color deepens the sense of antiquity. The landscape becomes a study in silver light, weathered stone, and profound shadow. Its elaborate towers possess the solemn grandeur of an abandoned civilization, their intricate architecture extending across the amphitheater in silent succession. But these castles stand deserted, a kingdom whose history was written long before the arrival of humanity. The centuries pass without ceremony.
Summary:
A dramatic black-and-white panoramic portrait of Bryce Canyon National Park, where countless hoodoos rise in the shapes of ancient castles, ruined battlements, and forgotten citadels. The monochrome treatment emphasizes the extraordinary architecture of the stone, revealing intricate textures, sweeping limestone slopes, and deep ravines through a rich interplay of light and shadow. The composition captures the haunting atmosphere of an abandoned kingdom and the immense geological history of the American Southwest.
