Artist’s Statement:
The boats of Dingle are as expressive as the town itself—bold, weathered, and unmistakably alive. Their paint tells stories of salt, labor, and time, layered in thick strokes of color that feel almost defiant against the gray Atlantic light. These vessels are not staged; they are working tools, resting briefly between journeys into waters that have sustained generations.
Dingle’s fishermen follow routes older than memory, casting out into the same sea that has shaped Ireland’s western identity. Yet the harbor is only one thread in a richer tapestry. Once home to a thriving linen industry, the town has long balanced labor with craft, evolving into a vibrant hub of traditional pubs, music, and local artistry—where stories are traded as freely as songs, and where there is, in fact, a pub for every forty residents...
That same spirit has drawn storytellers from afar. The surrounding landscape—raw, cinematic, and steeped in myth—has served as the backdrop for films spanning decades, from The Islandman to Ryan’s Daughter, Excalibur, The Field, Far & Away, and even Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Dingle thrives both as a working town and as a place of imagination, where daily life and legend overlap.
The composition leans into that duality. The tight framing compresses the boats together, emphasizing their individuality while reinforcing their shared purpose. Reflections ripple below, softening the scene just enough to remind us that everything here is in motion, even at rest.
I worked in a paint-like styling here, because it seems right...
