Artist’s Statement:
Deep within the amphitheater of Bryce Canyon, an ancient kingdom of stone stands beneath a cold blue light. Weathered towers rise from the steep slopes, their fractured crowns and elaborate battlements overlooking narrow passages that descend into darkness. The great walls stand in silent ranks, their pale surfaces illuminated against the deep shadows of the surrounding ravines. There is an atmosphere of abandonment here, the haunting beauty of a civilization lost somewhere in forgotten ages.
The vertical composition emphasizes the soaring height of these natural castles, each rising above the one below. The distinctive blue selenium toning gives the landscape its mysterious character. Cold, silvery highlights illuminate the highest battlements, while deep blue-gray shadows settle into the hidden passages. The familiar warmth of Bryce Canyon has surrendered to a colder, more distant world, where the ancient towers stand beneath an almost spectral light. The cool tonal palette gives the canyon an otherworldly calm. Light settles across the stone like moonlight, revealing a place where the familiar forms of the desert seem to drift toward myth, silent, enduring, and beyond measure.
Summary: A haunting blue selenium-toned portrait of the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park. Ancient towers, fractured battlements, and intricate stone pinnacles rise above steep canyon slopes, creating the atmosphere of a long forgotten world. Cold silvery highlights and deep blue-gray shadows lend the landscape a mysterious, spectral quality, emphasizing the extraordinary architecture and geological history of the American Southwest.
